Boracay, The Island That Never Sleeps

Overview

In the very center of the Philippine Islands is the tiny island of Boracay.  But don’t let the size fool you.  With its clear blue waters and dazzling beaches, Boracay should be somewhere on your travel radar.  Along the west side of the island, called White Beach, you will find resorts, restaurants, as well as lots of nightlife and bars. The Boat Station numbers will be your point of reference down the coast.  On the east side of the island is where you can find watersports to fill out your day.

One thing to keep in mind is that Boracay is a small island and you will have to get there by boat.  Keep that in mind if you’re considering packing heavy.  Also, there are very few cars on the island.  While you can walk most places, you can also catch a ride in a motorized tricycle with a covered sidecar to save some time. 

Boracay Things to Do and See

The first thing you need to know about Boracay is that you are not coming here for art and culture.  You won’t be visiting museums and learning about the history of the Philippines or doing any high-end shopping. You’re going to wake up around noon, grab some brunch, and get a massage on the beach, just because.   Then you’ll do some sort of water activity, hang out on the beach and party all night. 

Willy’s Rock

Willy’s Rock is a volcanic formation sitting just off of the beach near Station 1.  There are stairs up the rock that lead you to a statue of the Virgin Mary.  I’ve never gotten the full story on Willy’s Rock, but it’s said to be Boracay’s most photographed landmark.

Scuba & Snorkeling

Crystal clear waters make Boracay a perfect place to get in some scuba diving or snorkeling.  The reefs and shipwrecks that surround the island are great places to explore and attract a lot of marine life to observe. 

Reef Walk

If you’re not scuba certified and your swimming skills aren’t up to par for snorkeling, then try reef walking.  This is where they put a heavy helmet on you and pump air down from the surface allowing you to walk around the seafloor and see the different fish and corals that inhabit the reefs.  Most reef walking excursions will give you food to attract fish so you can make sure you take a memorable photo home.

Parasailing

If underwater adventures aren’t your thing, then give parasailing a try for an overwater experience. Up in the air, you get a different perspective of the island.  It’s easy to overlook the lush green jungles, rocky coastlines, and caves when you haven’t seen them front the top. 

Boracay Nightlife

Boracay’s nightlife scene is legendary.  There’s a party going on somewhere every night of the week.  There are bars and nightclubs all along White Beach, but there are some off the beach spots that are worth checking as well. On top of that, there are plenty of day party options too.  While there are a ton of nightlife options, don’t expect a lot of variety.

Boracay Food

The food in Boracay is nothing short of amazing.  I’m a sucker for Filipino food and seafood, so it doesn’t get much better for me.  Plus, there are tons of international food options around the island.  It also doesn’t hurt when you’re eating your meals steps away from the beach.

Boracay Cost

Your money can go a long way in Boracay.  Do you start your day with a massage on the beach, sure?  Maybe you should splurge on a beach bungalow, why not.  How about a room with a private infinity pool, might as well.  This place definitely has an indulgent traveler in mind.

Boracay Safety

Boracay is a generally safe travel destination. Incidents involving locals are rare, but they have happened. And while it’s not a huge problem, keep an eye out for scams. Just keep in mind that Boracay is a party island, sometimes people party too hard.
